Access to the ringing chamber at Cottingham is novel, a spiral staircase brings you level with the bells. You then open a trap-door and desend into the ringng chamber by a steep ladder.
The bells are a mixture of founders from 1638 to 1897 when the front 4 were added to make an 8 in a new steel frame.

A fire in 1964 destroyed much of the church, the 3 bells were melted by the heat of the blaze. The church was refitted and re-dedicated on 11th December 1965. At this time only 1 bell had been fitted. The new 6 were fitted by Taylors in 1973. The tower is fitted with good sound control and the ease of ringing these bells have made them one of the BnD's most pealed towers.

There were originally two bells at Middleton, these were recast into the present 4th in 1873 by Taylors. The current 3rd and 5th were added in 1877. Two trebles from 1884 and a tenor cast in 1897 complete the ring. The bells were re-hung in 1972, and further work carried out in 1990 when the present band was formed under the encouragement of Derek Watson.
